Rhythm Beads - Express Yourself With Color   by Mrs Ed

With deer hunting season for riflemen and women just around the corner, I have been thinking up ways to protect myself and my horse when we go riding down roads that run through wooded areas. I've decided to wear red or orange, and have a bright red blanket for my horse. I've also come across something interesting called "rhythm beads".

WHAT ARE RHYTHM BEADS?

Rhythm beads are bells embellished with colorful beads, horse-hair, feathers, medallions or anything decorative placed on a horse and/or tack. They can be sleigh bells, or any other type of bell you want depending on personal taste. Rhythm beads are sometimes referred to as "speed beads," "cadence beads," "horse beads," or even "bear bells."

While I use them to create noise to let hunters know my horse is not a deer, they are - I've since discovered - used as a training aid for both horse and rider. Apparently the rhythm they create teaches horse and rider to maintain a steady and constant pace or gait. They are also considered very calming and relaxing to horses. "Spooky" or nervous horses are soothed by them, although a small period of time may be required to get some horses used to the jingling. I can't vouch for the calming effect personally since my horse is naturally very laid-back and calm with or without the bells. My guess, however, is that they are in-fact very calming. They are musical and pleasant to listen to.

I first heard of rhythm beads from a fellow rider. I ended up making my own. I used bright, shiny sleigh bells, and bright red beads. I absolutely love the way they sound. They were a small set made to clip on the rings of the saddle or on the breast collar. Afterwords I decided to go online and get some ideas for making more. Wow, there are some beautiful and bright rhythm beads to be worn around a horse's neck, mane, and tail and on tack. I must admit I'd never thought there was so much custom horse tack bling available!

If your interest is peaked, all it will take is a Google search. Just type in "rhythm beads" and you will be amazed at all the - what I've come to call - "horse bling bling stores" available to you. The craftsmanship is wonderful. The pricing is very reasonable. They make great gifts for the horse lovers on your Christmas list too! Yes, Christmas is coming. You can even make your own if you want to tap into your creative juices.

HANDMADE CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEAS

This time I'll try my hand at learning how to make horse rhythm beads into a necklace. I have provided a link below which contains some basic directions if you'd like to make one as well. You can do different color-themes; say oranges and golds for Halloween and autumn, or colors based on what each color represents.

WHAT DO DIFFERENT COLORS MEAN?

The meaning of colors varies according to personal ideas about colors, as well as tradition. For example, here is a break-down of the meaning of colors from the Eastern world and Native American culture:

Eastern World:

• Blue - wealth
• Purple - wealth
• Gold - wealth, strength
• Pink - marriage
• White - marriage, helpful, children, purity, travel, peace, mourning
• Gray -helpful
• Green - family, harmony, health, eternity, peace and/or posterity
• Red happiness
• Black - sadness, evil

Native American Tribes (vary from tribe to tribe):

• Black - the direction West (problems, death) night, underworlds, cold, disease, male, living (when worn on the face)
• White - the direction South (warmth, peace, happiness) winter, death, snow, peace (when worn on the face)
• Red - the direction east, wounds, sunset, blood, earth, day, thunder, power, passion, courage, violence (when worn on the face)
• Green - earth, summer, rain, plant life, harmony, night vision (when worn under the eyes on the face)
• Blue - the direction North (defeat, trouble), water, sky, clouds, lightning, moon, female, truth, serenity, healing, peace, trust, relaxation, wisdom, sadness
• Yellow - day, dawn, sunshine, intelligence, concentration, death (when worn on the face by those mourning)

Of course the color-symbolism is very interesting, but you can always do what I did. I just simply decided which colors would look good on my horse! Enjoy figuring out what colors and bells to use. I'm sure you'll dream-up some great looking rhythm beads. Now start working on your Christmas list, and have fun being creative!
