FINIALS    by caterin

The word Finials, comes from the word "feneal" meaning putting an end to. Finials - or Ends - are placed at the end of the curtain pole, and their primary function is to prevent the last curtain ring from falling off. Traditionally the base of the finial was always larger than the diameter of the curtain pole for this very reason. Today, however, styles and moods have changed and smooth, contemporary lines have steered towards the finial fitting flush with the curtain pole.

The curtain pole is functional, whilst the finial can bring life and texture. Finials can come in all manner of designs, shapes and sizes and can become the focal point of the window in their design style or finish - over stated, opulent ornately carved finials in lush gold leaf will make a dramatic statement to tall windows with flowing curtains, to small low key discs to emphasise the curtains or drapes

Made from different materials, finials are available in brass, wood, resin, steel, iron, and plastic. At the lower end of the market we find plastic finials, which are vacuum metalised to make them appear to be brass or chrome effect. As we move further up the market place more towards the higher end of the market, for example, finials for a 3" diameter wooden pole, you will find an industry of skilled crafts people who can individually turn and intricately carve finials to the client's specific requirements. Carving is a specialist art, and is fascinating to watch. A skilled carver will work with a small number of bevelled chisels, which can be intricately and expertly worked around or in a finial to create fascinating shapes like scrolls, flutes and beading. The beauty of hand carved finials is that each one is individual, each one is unique.
