Traditional and Contemporary Asian Wedding Dresses   by Mark Fang

An Asian wedding is as colorful as the festivities this region is popular for. Asia is very respectful of its traditions and customs. And while there are many Western cultural influences already, during special occasions such as weddings, the people pay homage to the meaningful and colorful traditions of their nation.

Asian wedding dresses are gaining such popularity that they are available in any style you want, modern or traditional. Choosing to wear an Asian wedding dress, if it is a nod to your heritage or simply because you love the design, brings a little intrigue of the Orient to your big day.

Asian Weddings are most expensive events - not just for the bride but also for the other women attending. The dress of the bride will be the main talk of the town, the design of the outfit, the color, the duppata work, the cost of the suit or sari, the place of purchase of the outfit, the color combination... Almost every corner of the sari is closely looked at by the other ladies attending.

Planning for wedding is carried out by keeping in mind the religious, cultural and traditional values. You can easily plan wedding if you are well-aware about the information and flavours of the wedding. Some of the minor things while decorating must be always kept in minds, which are a compulsory part of weddings, like there should be silk fans, as they are symbol of prosperity; there should be use of colors like red, yellow and gold. As red color is symbol of love, luck and affection, it is widely used in Asian weddings.

Traditionally, Asian brides where or incorporate red into their wedding dress, as red is a symbol of good luck. In Japan, brides wear a white kimono that is lined with red whereas in China and India, brides where traditional dresses of red. Chinese brides wear red silk embroidered with gold or silver. And Indian bride's sari is also embroidered with gold, but also includes detailed beading.

In China, the color red is considered to bring good luck to the bride and will protect her from evil spirits. In Northern China, the bride wears a one piece frock called Qi Pao, which is elaborately embroidered with gold and silver designs. A red veil is worn over the face by the bride during the wedding ceremony. In southern China, the bridal costume consists of a two piece dress called Qun, Kwa or Cheongsam. The dress is adorned with phoenix and dragon designs, which symbolize the balance between male and female power. The traditional dress for a Chinese groom is a black silk coat worn over a blue rode with dragon designs on it. The headgear of the groom consists of a black hat with tassels on it.

In the larger part of India, sari is the traditional dress worn by the bride. The sari of the bride is red in color. Here again, there is a traditional and superstitious believe that the color red is auspicious and protects the bride from evil spirits. The embroidery work done on the sari depends on the wealth of the family of the bride. Rich families get embroidery work done in gold thread. Precious stones may also be stitched into the sari. Some Indian brides prefer to wear a lehnga with a short blouse. The lehnga is a long skirt, which has again elaborate embroidery on it. The base color of the lehnga is red and the amount of embroidery again shows the wealth of the family. The tunic or blouse is also embroidered.

Other countries such as Japan have weddings wherein the bride will wear three or more dresses. This is done throughout the ceremony and after which the bride will wear a kimono which is a popular Japanese traditional dress during the celebration proper.
