Varying Table Settings for Varying Needs   by Simon G Burke

A well thought out table setting will always spruce up the table and add sparkle to any occasion, and of course, make every and every meal time a wonderful experience to savor. It is with the settings alone that a guest would feel the extra efforts the host hade exerted to make the event at hand a more memorable one.

The setting basically involves the following: a napkin, service plate, soup bowl on a plate, bread and butter plate with corresponding bread knife, water glass, glasses for white wine and red wine (yes, they require separate glasses), fish fork, dinner fork, salad fork, service knife, fish knife, soup spoon and desert spoon and cake fork. At the left side of the dinner fork, place the salad fork. Remember that in a more formal table arrangement, it is highly recommendable that the main course is served to the guests before the salad entrée, so the dinner fork will be placed after the salad fork.

Wine connoisseurs would certainly agree that it is important that you appropriate the right glasses for the right wine because you cannot just pour wine in any glasses of your own choice. Wines are what we may call as “glass-sensitive” and to be able to capture or to draw out the wine’s distinctive flavor, use the correct glass for it. By pouring it in a suitable glass, you will be able to capture its unique flavor. A fitting example for this idea is the wine, Burgundy. To assist in bringing out its distinguishing flavor, one has to swirl it in the glass before every drink. Now common sense will dictate that if you are going to pour Burgundy wine in a tall, narrow glass, chances are you cannot swirl the wine and thus, bring out its true taste. And did you know that touching the bowl of the wine glass has certain effect to its temperature and eventually to its taste? That’s why as a general rule, choose wine glasses that have a relatively long stem so that one may not touch the bowl of the glass. As a simple guide:

- For water, use a full body glass.

- For the ever-popular champagne, a narrow, fluted wine glass is recommended to retain the bubbles.

- For white wine, a slightly smaller glass with wider bowl

- For brandy, a cocktail glass should be used.

- For Burgundy Reds and Pinot Noirs, as mentioned earlier, a wide-bowled glass that is slightly taller than the glass for a white wine

Now of course, the theme of the party or the event will fully determine the kind of table arrangement that will be provided and it will also follow the number of table and glassware that will be used. For instance, in an African table setting, it would be better if the setting will involve beaded candle pots, bean balls and napkin rings made of leather (you can also choose string wooden beads and leather thong to tie up the napkins) and string baubles. Placing a copper bowl on the table and putting there the bean balls and the napkin rings will definitely make a strong statement as a decorative accent. An authentic table arrangement for an African-inspired theme should involve accents or decorative pieces that use plenty of natural materials such as pottery, leather, clay and beads. Serve soups in small clay pots that have various beads tied around on its lid. A table runner with leopard prints or zebra stripes will assuredly exude that safari feel which is a trademark Africa. As for an Asian counterpart, an Asian table setting will feature dishes that mostly come in the traditional gold, red and blue colors, and usually these colors are bold. Place a glass bowl with water as an added centerpiece and make some lighted tea candles float into them. Use ceramic plates in turquoise blue with a dragon design on the sides or bamboo stainless-steel flatware partnered with ruby goblets. Wooden chopsticks will also add that distinct Asian touch into the table arrangement.

If you happen to throw off a party to welcome the coming of a new baby, prepare to execute an exciting baby shower table arrangement that will make each guest feel how wonderful the feeling is of having a new family member. Creatively incorporate various baby-associated items into the table arrangement like bibs, diapers, rattles, baby bottles, pacifiers. Diapers can be ingenuously used as table mats or if sewn together, as unique table runners. Bibs may replace the napkins on the table and take over on new role. Transform the baby bottles into something different by putting two to three flowers inside and have them as your centerpieces. Indeed, instant “vases” for the flowers! Download from the computer black and white photos of different cute shots of babies and make then your table setting pictures. Let some baby shoes hang from the sides of the backrest of the chairs. Serve home-baked brownies and assorted pastries for deserts and place them inside baby socks.

As with any table settings, the basic or traditional rules apply but you can bend them sometimes to inject your own personality, mood and even racial background into them.
